Labiaplasty - Why have
Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty, also known as Labioplasty or Labia Reduction,
is the correction or reduction of the labia – the folds of
skin surrounding the vulva.
These folds may have become either lengthened or asymmetrical for a number
of reasons including age, childbirth or even simply an
injury. Some women are simply born with enlarged labia.
Women with enlarged labia can often experience frictional
discomfort during lovemaking and even general day to day
activities such as wearing a sanitary towel, exercising, or
even wearing tight clothes. Another common problem is self-consciousness
during sex, which can have a profound effect on intimacy
with a partner and really inhibit a woman’s pleasure.
Advances in surgery now mean that if a woman really feels
that such an issue is holding her back, it is within her
grasp to do something about it.
What is involved in a
Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty or Labia Reduction aims to reduce or realign the
labia, making them more symmetrical and often more ‘tucked
in’. This is done either by trimming the labial edges or
alternatively by excision of a wedge from the upper or lower
lips before re-stitching the edges together.
Labiaplasty usually takes at least an hour or so to perform
and is conducted under general anaesthetic. Often the
operation can be performed as a day case and you can return
home on the same day.
The area is likely to be swollen for a while and you will
experience some post-operative discomfort but this can be
controlled with painkillers. Healing is usually relatively
swift and most patients can return to work within two weeks.
The risks associated with
Labiaplasty
Any operation carries the small risk of infection and
prolonged bleeding, as well as those associated with
anaesthetic.
With Labiaplasty there is also a risk of loss of sensation
and scarring but these are very rare.

carry few risks and side effects.
